ACTIVITIES held from 21st March to 25th March 2011

Navroz was celebrated by all the students of Pre-Primary. The objective was to share the spirit and message of Parsi New Year which heralds the beginning of the spring season. It is celebrated in the first month of the Zoroastrian calendar year. The children learnt how the Parsis decorate their houses on this day with rangoli in auspicious symbols of butterfly, star, bird and fish. The special dish ‘rawa sheera’ which is cooked on Navroz was distributed to all the students on this day.

In order to identify, understand and have fun with colours, the Nursery students celebrated “Fun With Colours” on 23rd March, 2011. Each one was dressed in black and white coloured clothes. They enjoyed making black and white collage, and even had a streamer race and a black and white streamer dance.

ACTIVITIES held from 12th March to 19th March 2011

St Patrick’s Day was celebrated by the students of Nursery and Junior KG on 15th March, 2011 and Senior KG kids on 16th March, 2011. The children learnt about St. Patrick, who with the help of the Shamrock spread the message of God’s love and how this day is celebrated in Ireland. The life of St. Patrick and his good work was discussed with the students. The day concluded with activities like the making of a Rainbow Mobile by the Senior KG students.

The colourful festival of Holi was celebrated with Nursery and Junior KG children on 18th March, 2011. They played with water to establish the spirit of bonding and friendship. The teacher narrated the story of Holika and Prahlad to reinforce the victory of good over evil.

ACTIVITIES held from 5th March to 11th March 2011

A Special Day “Off on a Flight” on Aeroplanes as a form of air transport, was celebrated by Junior KG students on 7th March, 2011. The classrooms were rearranged to resemble the inside of an aircraft. Air hostesses, pilots and cabin crew were simulated by students. They were trained to play the role of an airhostess welcoming the passengers, giving safety instructions, and serving refreshments to the passengers. The pilots also simulated flying of an aeroplane with radars.

Playschool students were introduced to the concept of ‘Family Bonding and Values’ through a Movie- “Noddy’s Family Tree” and a Picture Talk on 7th March, 2011. They discussed about their family members like- mother, father, brother and sister and also grandparents. The understanding was further reinforced by using related puppets.

The students of Junior KG were taken to a Petrol Pump on 9th March, 2011. The objective of the Field Trip was to know about the ‘Fuel’ used in cars and two wheelers. They were shown the use of a petrol meter, air pumps, a hose etc. They also witnessed the different types of vehicles that visit the petrol pump for refuelling. The children saw a lot of construction vehicles en route.

The students of Senior KG visited a Photo Studio on 9th March, 2011. They were given a demonstration of photographic equipments, their usage and the basic adjustments. They were told how digital pictures are uploaded onto a computer and shared on networking sites, and how technological advancement helps in our daily life.

A workshop on Stress Management was conducted on 9th March, 2011 for the Pre-Primary teachers. The module included manifestations of Stress– physical, emotional, mental, and behavioural. The symptoms and causes of Stress was also discussed. It also incorporated techniques of combating Stress in relaxation forms. The methodology used was a mix of PowerPoint presentations, lecture, case studies, role play and simulation. All participants voiced a positive feedback in terms of understanding and application.

In order to identify, understand and have fun with colours, the Junior KG students celebrated “Fun With Colours” on 11th March, 2011. Each one was dressed in the clothes they didn't mind getting dirty in. They had to put the painting brush between their toes and paint on art sheets. This helped them to reinforce the different types of colours.

Community Helpers 

In continuation to the theme- Community Helpers, the Playschool children visited a Salon on 4th March, 2011. They were introduced to the Hair Dresser who demonstrated a ‘hair cut’ to the little ones. She showed them the different instruments used by them- scissors, mirrors, etc. and explained the need for regular ‘hair cuts’.

Community Helpers

The students of Playschool came dressed as Community Helpers on 28th February, 2011. They were dressed as Dhobis, Postmen, Traffic Policemen, Nurses etc. Each one explained their role in serving the community along with details of their daily duties.

Baking Day

In continuation to the theme of ‘Community Helpers’ a ‘Baking' Day’ was organized for the students of Playschool on 25th February, 2011. They were instructed about the different steps involved in baking of a cake. They decorated a cake with sprinkles. They also learnt about the different items that the Baker bakes.

In order to familiarize the Senior KG students with the origin of their favourite Movie Snack- Popcorn, a story was narrated on 25th February, 2011. Jacob Beresin from North America started the custom of making popcorn. Today, we have modified this favourite snack to include flavours like Caramel, Butter, Cheese and Tomato. The students were asked to put on their creative caps, and suggest more flavours. This enabled the children to understand the five senses.

ACTIVITIES held from 20th February to 24th February 2011

Scientist Day

The students of Senior KG celebrated Scientist Day on 22nd February, 2011. They donned a Scientist’s cap and through simple experiments learnt about the materials which are soluble and insoluble in water. They conducted the experiments with sugar, salt, oil and sand and observed whether they dissolve in water or not. They now understood Science better.

An eminent Businessman visited our school on 23rd February, 2011. He shared his views with the students of Senior KG on the new inventions that have been implemented for office use and how business strategies have changed over the years. He spoke to them on the advanced ways of Communication, Advertisement and Transportation.

Students of Junior KG were shown the film ‘Bob the Builder- Scoop Saves the Day’ on 18th February, 2011. They saw the various transport vehicles used during construction, in this film. It was followed by a discussion of these vehicles. Thus they were able to reinforce their learning of this topic.

Chinese New Year

As per the Chinese calendar, the Year of the Rabbit was celebrated on 14th February, 2011 by the Pre-Primary students. Activities included making Tiger finger puppets, Lion puppets and sharing information on Chinese culture and festivals.

It was ‘Washing Day’ for Playschool students on 15th February, 2011. The ambience was created with a clothes line and three corners allocated for washing, drying and ironing. Students came dressed as dhobi’s and were taught the intricacies of washing.

To promote the spirit of creativity and innovation, a ‘Crazy Creation day’ was scheduled for Senior Kg on 15th February, 2011. Students were encouraged to think of their problems and design solutions creatively. They used paints and crayons to depict their crazy ideas. Some of them made presentations explaining their ideas and how they would solve their problems.

ACTIVITIES held from 11th February to 14th February 2011

Flowers in all their hues, shapes and sizes were seen by the students of Junior KG, during their Visit to the Nursery on 11th February, 2011. They were now able to visualize the beauty and grandeur of flowers, and their distinctive value as gifts for various occasions through bouquets and baskets. They now learnt the useful role played by a florist.

To coincide with the theme of love on Valentine’s Day (14th February), Pre-Primary students made ‘I Love You’ cards for their parents with little hearts painted on them. The significance of this day in memory of St. Valentine was explained to them.

ACTIVITIES held from 7th February to 10th February 2011

In continuation to the theme of ‘Plant Life’, a ‘Flower Power’ theme was executed on 7th February, 2011 for Junior Kg. With the aid of music and melody the blooming of a flower from the seed, was demonstrated. The students learnt about the fantastic flowers, about food for flowers through sunlight, water and air. The day concluded with finger painting on flower cut outs.

In continuation to the theme “Work People Do”, students of Nursery were taken to the Fire Station on 8th February, 2011. They witnessed a fire fighting demonstration with the fire brigade, hose pipe and uniformed firemen. They understood the valuable role of the fire brigade and firemen in preventing mishaps due to accidental fires.

To understand the celestial world of the Sun, Moon, stars, planets, a “Solar System Day” was celebrated for Senior Kg on 8th February, 2011. Students were asked to come dressed as any element of the Solar System. They could now learn to identify the components of the Solar System.

ACTIVITIES held from 31st January to 4th February 2011

On 31st January, 2011 the Nursery kids met a Dentist who shared information about dental hygiene, correct brushing techniques and the secrets of pearly white teeth. He demonstrated the equipments used by him. Students were now convinced of developing the “twice a day” brushing habit.”

In order to identify and understand colours, the Nursery students celebrated “Colour Fun Day” on 1st February, 2011. Each one was dressed in the colour ‘Purple’. The setting was replete with corners earmarked for purple forms- vegetables, fruits, streamers, collage cut outs and so on. These were supplemented with games to reinforce the colour purple.

The dramatic story of the “Shoemaker and the Elves” was scripted and dramatized for the Nursery students on 3rd February, 2011. The purpose was to enhance their listening and visionary skills. The day concluded with discussion on these key learning's.

The carpenter visited the Nursery class along with his tools on 24th January, 2011. The children learnt how the tools are used and a demonstration was given to reinforce the theme “Work People Do.”

In order to expose the students to the importance of trees and their various uses a field trip to the botanical garden “Empress Garden” was organized for the students of Senior Kg on 25th January, 2011. They were shown the different types of trees and explained their role in providing oxygen for healthy living. The day concluded with the sharing of snacks and discussing nature.

The series of “Work people do” included a meeting with chefs in their kitchen on 27th January, 2011. The Nursery students learnt the functions of a chef as he bakes a cake and decorates it, uses a measuring cup, the need of a chef’s hat and so on. It was a learning experience for the students who understood that the kitchen was not only the domain of their mother.

The Jewish festival of Tu B’Shvat was celebrated by Pre-Primary on 28th January, 2011. This is called the New Year of trees. It was meant to coincide with the theme for the month, which was, “Plant Life.” The children were explained about how the age of the tree is calculated on this day. They also ate grapes, dates, figs and pomegranate which formed a part of the festivities. They then planted seeds in little pots, which will be watered daily by them and then carried home by the end of the week.

ACTIVITIES held from 17th January to 19th January 2011.

The event ‘VIVA’ of VIBGYOR Kids, Pune which took place on 17th, 18th and 19th January, 2011 was a kaleidoscope of international flavours. What comes across is an undaunted desire to climb high that can be seen in these eager hearts laying a foundation for future successes with both style and élan. Parents turned out in huge numbers to be a part of the VIVA celebrations to encourage and applaud their little ones as they went through their well choreographed routines. In their young eager faces we could see the future generation of Vibgyorites. The dawn of 19th morning marked the opening of sports events for the Pre-primary children. It was carnival time for the little ones, laced with competition.

ACTIVITIES held from 3rd January to 7th January 2011.

The ‘Beautiful Birds’ activity was conducted for students of Junior Kg on 5th January, 2011, to recapitulate the theme of the month. The students viewed a CD on various birds and answered questions related to them. The activity concluded with the students colouring and putting together a mini book depicting the different stages in the life cycle of a bird.

With global warming looming large above us and conservation of the environment being the primary focus, ‘Recycling’ is an essential habit. The students of Senior Kg were taught about the careful use of resources like water and paper. They also made paper bags out of waste paper as an extended activity on 5th January, 2010.

ACTIVITIES held from 20th December to 23rd December 2010..

Hanukkah

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights was celebrated on the 20th December, 2010 by Junior KG. The day was marked with the story on freedom to practice one’s own religion .The festivities included making the six pointed ‘Star of David’ used to decorate the Jewish houses, designing ’Dreidel’ photo frames and cutting paper plate ‘Menorah’s’ - the sacred lamp. The students were also exposed to the special menu that Jews prepare on that day.

Movie Time

Movie time for the Playschool students saw them watching “Oswald-Catrina’s Birthday Cake” in the audio visual room on 20th December, 2010. The film revolves around an Octopus called Oswald and its sea world. The students were introduced to the different features of this sea creature in an enjoyable manner.

The theme of the month was ‘Creepy Crawlies’. In keeping with the theme, Nursery students viewed the movie, “A Bug’s Life” on 20th December, 2010. This enhanced their understanding and identification of the world of insects and their various features..

Clean City-Green City

The “Clean City-Green City” event was organized for Senior KG students. It was conducted on 21st December, 2010. To raise awareness on the topic, the students were involved in outdoor activities of cleaning the school outdoors. They learnt about dry and wet garbage and separated them in two garbage tubs.

Sea Creatures came alive

Sea Creatures came alive, as Nursery students came dressed in their favourite sea creature costume on 22nd December, 2010. The backdrop in the class was done with cutouts and models of various sea creatures. They were told about the different features of the creatures. The day concluded with the singing of the songs “Three Little Fish”, and “Three Jelly Fish”.

Christmas Fiesta!!

In order to usher in the festive spirit of Christmas, a fiesta was organized for the students of the Pre-primary section on 23rd December, 2010. The classrooms were beautifully decorated with streamers, balloons, Christmas tree et al. The mood was further enhanced with Christmas carols being played and sung by the students. Activities included making Christmas cards, Christmas trees, wreaths, Santa goodie bags, etc. Students played different games like ‘Tape the nose on Snowman’, ‘Four Corners’ and so on. They also watched a film titled “Jingle All the Way” and enjoyed traditional Christmas snacks..

ACTIVITIES held from 13th December to 16th December 2010..

The classroom of Playschool was transformed into a night setting with the Moon and silver stars. The occasion was to celebrate a ‘Pyjama Party’ for the students on 13th December, 2010. Students came dressed in their night suits with their favourite soft toys. The events included sharing prayers and bed time stories by them. The party concluded with the children singing “Here we go round the mulberry bush” and wishing each other goodnight.

On 14th December, 2010, a “Fishy Fun” day was celebrated in Playschool. The objective was to introduce the students to different sea creatures. Students were exposed to different types of fishes and were explained their features like the fins, gills, tails etc. They played the game ‘Fishy Fun Race’ which was an appropriate finale for this theme.

The students of Senior Kg got an opportunity to watch the movie “Two Brothers” on 14th December, 2010. The objective of the movie watch was to create environmental awareness about the declining number of tigers in India. The moving story revolves around two tiger cubs that get separated. In order to reinforce this message, the students also made tiger face cut outs. They carried the cut outs to their home to hang on the doors and walls of their rooms.

A treasure hunt was organized for the Nursery kids, in their classroom on 15th December, 2010. The objective was to familiarize the students with alphabets ‘A’ to ‘Z’ and to identify objects using these letters along with the sounds. Apart from the objects, wooden cut outs of the letters were also hidden for them to find. This study by play method was enjoyed by the kids.

Visit to an Aquarium!!

The students of Junior Kg were taken for a “Visit to an Aquarium” on 7th December, 2010. They saw different types of fishes and identified their gills, fins, eating habits etc. Their theoretical knowledge was reinforced by the live aquarium. The day concluded with the children having snacks and discussing the various fishes which appealed to them.

As a finale to the concept of the month, the Nursery students celebrated ‘Underwater Adventure Day’ on 29th November, 2010. The children came dressed as their favourite Underwater creatures and introduced the creatures and their characteristics through role play. This methodology reinforced their learning and understanding of Marine Creatures.

In order to share the message of gratitude for all the good things and times the children have, and acknowledging the bond of friendship, Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by Senior Kg students’ on 29th November, 2010. The activity for the day was ‘Thanksgiving dinner relay’. The teachers reinforced this message by participating in a role play which the students watched and enjoyed. They were shown the symbols of Thanksgiving which included corn, cranberry, pumpkins and turkey.

In order to hone the children's listening and speaking skills, an Underwater Creature Day was conducted on 1st December, 2010 in Junior Kg. This was part of a Marine Creature series for the month. On this day, the children came dressed as their favorite underwater creature and performed accordingly. The classroom was set as a water body with hoopla, tubs et al. The children enjoyed playing with the plastic toys in the water tubs. They also made a drink associated with the beach i.e. Pinacolada with pineapple juice and coconut milk.

As an appropriate round up of the Underwater Series, a film entitled “Shark Tale” was shown to the students of Junior Kg on 2nd December, 2010. The various marine creatures like crabs, octopus, etc were pointed out to the students along with their dominant characteristics, shapes, and habitat and so on. Apart from being an educative experience, the children were able to identify and reinforce their learning of the concept.
